The lipstick is off the pig.

Suddenly it was summer, 2010

Above you will see a glimpse of my lunch. A raw salad. The perfect solution when you are just too hot and tired to consider anything else. San Francisco is freaking out a little. We've all come to expect the cool grey days we've been living with for the last, I'm not even sure how long, months? And suddenly, it's summer. Today should reach 94 degrees. This is such an unbelievable change. We even had mosquitoes buzzing in our ears last night. This never happens. Yesterday, I ventured out into the early evening air without a jacket. It seemed a miracle. It was amazing, wonderful, absolutely fantastic. This morning, I glided through the new warm air with bare arms and flip-flops and drank my cappuccino on a park bench. A few hours later, close to noon, I left a very challenging yoga class and wasn't feeling so lovely. I was seriously wiped out and ready to walk outside into the fresh cool air. No cool air today. I was immediately craving Shari's grandfather's spring water and cool raw vegetables. On my way home, I stopped at the market and bought these little tomatoes. Someone said they were so good and I was in the mood to believe good things. I picked up a variety of other light items that wouldn't require much heat or effort and was on my way, back into the not-at-all-cool air. Once I made it up the hill and into my apartment my mood had shifted from not-so-lovely to downright hot-and-grumpy. The honeymoon over. The lipstick off the pig. Be careful what you wish for is what I'm saying. I made this salad because I was just too hot and tired to consider anything else. I was not feeling the slightest bit patient or tolerant. Luckily, it was really good.

raw too-hot-and-tired-to-consider-anything-else salad

1 fresh ear of corn
1 generous handful of small highly-recommended tomatoes
1 glug of good olive oil (I used Bariani)
a few grinds of black pepper (I like my pepper ground coarse)
2 pinches of good fleur de sel
1 splash of red wine vinegar

Slice corn kernels from cob* and place in bowl. Rinse and stem tomatoes and add to bowl. Add olive oil, pepper, fleur de sel, and vinegar. Toss together. Eat.

*Today I discovered that slicing the kernels off the cob on the lid (placed upside down) for my 9x13 Pyrex pan keeps the kernels from scattering all over the counter and floor.

What did you eat for lunch today?

  8. To be in the mood to believe good things is one of the best moods of all! I can't believe it turned into summer on the day that I left. By the time I'm back again it will be fall. Ah, well. Enjoy your bare-armed days.

  12. crazy heat for your neighborhood--no wonder San Francisco is freaking out. that's tennessee-style heat. and it will wear on your last patient nerve. thank goodness, sweet corn and sungold tomatoes are ready to come to the rescue!

  13. Thanks, ladies. My salad wasn't quite enough. I had to add a few chocolate sea salt cashews and a blackberry yogurt before I was feeling like myself again. I hope today is a good day for all of us. Take care. xx, Denise

  14. I spent a long time trying to figure out why your pictures always capture a feeling so well. I think it may be largely due to the just-right lighting. Just an observation I had today.

  15. Erin, It was. When both main ingredients are fresh and totally in season, you just can't go wrong.

Stacy, What a nice thing to say. I am kind of crazy about light.

  16. Apparently your weather has traveled to us. We have been in the high 70s for 3 days now and sleep with the windows open. We're loving it.

So what books did you read on your trip?

  17. flwrjane, Nice weather for you. Enjoy. My trip is upcoming. I'm planning early. It's the only part I'm really good at getting done early, all other packing takes place morning of trip. I added one travel book, Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K. Jerome.

  18. Everyone else seemed to be complaining about the 94 degrees, while I secretly relished it. At least it felt a little like summer!
    The salad looks delicious :)

  19. we've had cool days lately but i hear we're headed back to the high eighties this weekend. your salad sounds like just the thing.

and the spring. it's one of my favorite memories from childhood.

  20. Indie.Tea, I'm a little embarrassed about my complaining, but it seems I enjoy true hot summer weather better when on vacation. The day-to-day hot didn't feel too good to me. I'm happy this morning with my grey sky and cool air.

shari, I suppose it would be boring if we had the same weather every single day, right? I really enjoyed reading Remembering My Lowcountry Summers. I loved the way the heat made me crave the water from Healing Springs, even though I'd never tasted a drop. That's what good writing does.

  21. Wow, I thought summer took a long time reaching us, but SF seems to be in its own world!

That salad seems just perfect (and I love how you wrote the recipe up!). If I can get the energy I'll have a spicy quinoa and cucumber salad for lunch today (I was met with >15 cucumbers coming out of the field). If I can't get the energy, just plain cucumbers!

  22. I've been eating a lot of tomato and snap pea salads from my garden, but I'm heading out to get some sweet corn to make this.

Your posts are a like a breath of fresh air to visit...

  23. Rachel, And our summer is already over. How about that? I'd love to know how you make your quinoa spicy. I'm making quinoa tonight. Cucumbers are a favorite of mine, especially fresh from the garden. Enjoy! There's a great cucumber poem (written by an 8 year old) in this post http://chezdanisse.blogspot.com/2008/08/cool-as-cucumber.html

mosey, Thank you. I don't think I've had snap peas since I grew my own. I believe peas of all types are best when picked from your own garden. Enjoy your corn. I wonder if you are looking at a new handmade book tonight...

  24. Your salad looks quite perfect for hot days. I may have to try it. As it is still hot here. ;)

  25. The lipstick is off the pig, well that has to be the best post title ever. I am now going slighly demented trying to remember who I once had a conversation with about lipstick on the pig. Anyway, perfect salad for hot days - we are still steaming here,I just wish the sweetcorn was nicer here - you can't have everything I suppose.

  26. I didn't muster the energy and ate plain cucumbers instead...but here is the recipe if interested. Looks like jalapenos and vinegar add the spiciness. I'll try this tonight for sure.

I forgot to mention another tip for corn...I use a bundt (sp?) pan. Hold the ear upright in the 'hole' in the middle and all the kernels will fall into the pan and the ear doesn't move all around. ;)

  27. Maria, Gosh, the weather is all over the place here, but I'd still happily eat corn and tomatoes on any of those days. I hope you feel a little cool air soon.

rachel (racheleats), I've always loved that particular pig phrase. You may not have great corn, but you do have so many other wonderful items. Hopefully you aren't melting over there. I hope granitas are helping.

Rachel (These Times We Are Living In), I like jalapenos and vinegar. I might try it too. Great bundt pan idea for corn. Thanks!

  28. Love that kind of salad!

Too much heat in SF is just not right - sun with a cool breeze it perfection...

  29. It's funny how a comfortably warm day can slip so quickly into intolerable heat. I will remember your salad the next time I can't bear to use the stove. Not a concern today since it is dumping rain on us in Portland! :-)

  30. I'm gonna have this for lunch today. sounds perfect.

  31. Jessica, And yesterday I was in a scarf and jacket...things change so quickly.

abigail, I hope you are indulging while the tomatoes and corn are still good. I'm still loving tomatoes, but didn't see my favorite corn stand during my last trip to the market.
