Handwriting

Late May, 2015

I recently bought this book, secondhand. When I opened it up for the first time last night I found this surprise, Michael Ondaatje's signature.

Michael Ondaatje held this book in his hands and signed it.

He is the only man my husband does not want me to run into when he's out of town, even though he too is married, and older than my father. I do love a good book. And have you ever seen the photograph of him in the blue sweater? #threepoemsthursday

  1. You're a bookish vixen. But I totally get it. ;)

  2. Your husband is a smart man. I've had a thing for Michael Ondaatje for years. I went to a reading of his years ago in NY. And later in Houston. That voice!

    1. It's those eyes. Seeing him read his work is truly special. And then there's the experience of reading The English Patient, Divisadero, The Cat's Table, and Running in the Family... Good stuff.

  4. I did not know this name...and then when I went to google an image (of course I did), I saw that he wrote the English Patient (which I'm sad to say that I've never read, but did see). And now I wonder, after the joy of listening to your last suggestion, if you can direct me to one of his readings online (if there is one)? I get the eyes...now I need to experience the voice. And maybe you could suggest a perfect first book of his?

    Bookish vixen...oh, that is perfect!

    1. I've only seen Ondaatje read live, so I'm not sure about an online reading, but I'd like to find one too. Running in the Family is a good introduction to his work. Enjoy!

    1. A treat! And the poems... I keep returning to A Gentleman Compares His Virtue to a Piece of Jade and Death at Kataragama. Good stuff.
