Hi, Rachel. It was very good! This might seem a strange thing to say, but it was both intense and quiet at the same time. I became quite fond of the characters and really started to get sad about leaving them as I neared the end of the book. I get so nervous about suggesting books to others, but I have a feeling you'd like this one. If you give it a try, I'd love to know what you think.
I took your suggestion and picked this up a couple weeks ago -- I know it's hard to recommend books sometimes but I'm very glad that you did. And I would 100% agree with the statement that it was both intense and quiet at the same time. My review on goodreads...
"This is a quiet novel and one that moves along at a pace of internal struggle and development -- which is to say slowly. Watching the development and transitions that the main character goes through over the course of the year the novel takes place is fascinating. I have to admit that the writing style was hard for me at the beginning...to the point that I didn't know if I was going to make it through the book. I don't know if it was the cadence, the odd sentence structure, or the strange use of certain words...or just my current state of mind...but it was hard for me to read. After I got used to it and became more invested in the story (maybe 20% into the book), I didn't notice it as much. However, the last little bit of the book, when the story slowed way down again and my attention went from the plot and characters back to the writing, I struggled again."
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Rachel. I know you found the style somewhat challenging, so I'm happy to know you enjoyed watching the main character develop and move bravely through a transformational year of her life.
Observer. Also, author of the novel “After the Sour Lemon Moon.” I recorded a free audio version at the beginning of the pandemic. You can find it in my Instagram bio, in highlights.
Was it??
