While in Real Life

Rose in Mailbox, 2014
Human communication, it sometimes seems to me, involves an exaggerated amount of time. How briefly and to the point people always seem to speak on the stage or on the screen, while in real life we stumble from phrase to phrase with endless repetition.

Graham Greene, Travels with My Aunt

  1. i also once hear that if we were to condense our lives into a 2 hour movie... not many lives would have enough content to fill those 2 hours...

  2. true....and yet, I tend to like the rambles of life.

  3. Thank goodness we're not always 'to the point' though. What would love be without its repetitions?

  4. I haven't read that book in years. Time for another look.
I wonder if GG would have liked texting?

    1. Texting definitely stumbles more than performing on stage or screen.

  5. I like the simplicity and statement of the rose in the mailbox. Good thoughts.

    1. I read that Graham Greene described Travels with My Aunt as "the only book I have written just for the fun of it," and it reads this way. I'm enjoying it.

I was very happy to find the scene in the above picture. A special moment.

  7. I have been watching old shows of West Wing on Netflix. It is good writing but the rapid-fire delivery is dizzying at times. I was just wondering what conversation would be like if it were also as educated, eloquent and brisk, when I read the lovely quote by Mr. Greene. I think I would like to read that book. Your photo also tells a story that I would like to hear.

My own verbal communication takes a deal of patience to listen to. If only I were able to edit my verbal processing as I do my writing...I do try, but I suppose that is one reason why I often talk to myself--myself understands. Thankfully, my husband understands too.

I'm happy to have a husband that understands too.
