Us

The Pond, 2012

He wakes like toast. Straight up without pause. I am far more meandering, more of a slow-cooked egg.

I imagine his daydreams are closer to home than mine, related in some way to his task at hand. But I have no evidence. He doesn't tell me about them.

Mine are odd floating daydreams, frequently simple objects drifting above and past me, just skimming my peripheral vision. Often food. Yesterday I saw the Good Humor strawberry shortcake ice cream bar of my childhood pass by, and later a plate of poached salmon, green beans, and new potatoes with dill.

I told him what I saw. I don't believe it changed his opinion of me.

  3. I love talking about dreams with my husband. Our world views are clearly different, as yours seem to be as well! Sometimes I even dream about bloggers I've never met in real life, it's so bizarre.

  4. I too am a toast waker....but never knew how to describe it before.

GG on the other hand slowly swims to the surface, bad dreams weighing her down.

  5. A toast waker and a slow-cooked egg. You couldn't find a more perfect match.

  6. Synthesis of image and words. Wonderful.

  7. I love the way one's brain can loosen and connect to the wider world, then hone back in.

  8. So elegantly put Denise - I do like the analogy of waking up like toast! My husband is exactly the same, whereas I am very much like a slow cooked egg. I've often wondered about other people's daydreams, and meandering thoughts...whether they too wandered from here, to there, and around the way, or whether they were more purposeful and defined. Thank you for sharing your observations. Annie x

  9. Beautifully put; a perfect piece, from the toast-like briskness to the floating food. I read it three times.

  10. I'm like him, the toast type. My day dreams are like yours however, I love how they float by, coming unannounced- tiny morsels of memory from somewhere in my past, coming back to visit!

  12. How our minds work, it is so funny. There are people in my dreams, but also very strong shapes.

But to dream about food, it might be fun.

New potatoes. I wait them to grow soon. First, there is still a lot of snow to melt. At least when it snows heavily some new one today.

  14. I think you may have just described some of the differences between J and I to a tee. Me more like you...J more like him.

  16. I'm a fellow egg who needs space and time before rising. I love the thought of your food-related dreams, passing by so nicely plated. I have the unappealing habit of suddenly asking J what he's thinking. Never satisfactory for either of us. I like that you tell but don't demand in return. I should try that..

  17. I read this to my sweetheart and it gave us both a good laugh. I'm a slow cooked egg, too. And he is most definitely toast.
I love the photo and the makings of your daydreams.

  20. This. Perhaps the shortest yet definitely the most brilliant piece of writing I've read this week.

And I'm not sure you'd call what I had a day-dream but thoughts of eggs led to images of soufflés and crème brûlées floating skyward. Perhaps a visual metaphor for the way you combine words & images into elegant creations.

  21. Always enchanted by the visual you draw with your considered words... "Mine are odd floating daydreams, frequently simple objects drifting above and past me, just skimming my peripheral vision."

    Thanks.

  23. I just found you. So glad that I did. This reads like poetry. I had to read it out loud–it triples the pleasure. Did you write this piece like toast or like a slow cooked egg? Lovely, lovely, lovely.
