Alone on the Beach

Earthwork, 2014

Last night, deep into twilight, I was walking along the shoreline. It was very near dark and I thought of how I always tell Chris that I don't like walking over sand in the dark, how holes could get camouflaged and lead to twisted ankles, or worse. As I looked down, unable to see much of the sand or the steps I was taking, I realized I am less careful when I'm alone.

  1. What an interesting observation. I wonder why that is--and now I'm wondering about myself!

    1. It does feel backwards, but maybe it's because it's easier to get lost in an ocean view, or any landscape, when one isn't chatting. But that only explains one situation. I also left my key in the front door the other day...

  2. Interesting. With many people, myself included, it would be the other way. Though that's changing.

  3. I surprised myself, Jen. I'd never noticed this before. Maybe it's new, I'm not sure.

    1. Well it's a cool observation. I like to take solo trips too. I see things differently.

Also, every time I see the name of this post I append the words "with an eggplant".

  4. I first noticed it in myself while in a long period alone, abroad. It gave me confidence in the reservoir of strength and resilience I have.

    1. Kate! You are here. I am pleased.

Resilience is one of the most valuable traits. It allows one to take risks and to know in the midst of darkness that there is still light ahead.

  5. intrigued by the observation (am I that way?--I'm not sure)
even more intrigued by this photograph--quality of light, and the pattern of water-filled steps

  6. Someone's handiwork left for the tide to take. Something beautiful about that. It reminds me of the Andy Goldsworthy film, Rivers and Tides.

  8. Your beach walks, the reflections, the dots of birds kept me enthralled on Instagram. And now here.

  9. Exactly! I'm always braver when I'm alone. I dare to dare then.
