Reason To Be

Someone I Met Earlier This Summer, in Palm Springs, 2014

I've been thinking about a phrase my friend Tiziana mentioned in an email. She wrote this email back in April. I know I have something to say about it, but it is still percolating...
"In Italian we would say "ha un suo perché" (it is a slang that we use when something unusual has its own reason to be)."

  1. Was he friendly? And what a good saying - makes me think of a platypus...

    1. He was behind a little fence, so I'm not sure exactly how friendly he was, but he was very calm, cool, and collected. He paced back and forth with complete poise, like a model on a runway. It was so great.

  2. That phrase too has its own, perfect reason to be I bet; seems very useful. Sometimes English falls short.

Idiomatic sentences are my favorite part of a language: you learn so much about a culture through them!
The literal translation in Italian of "ha un suo perche'" is "it is it's own why"... asking questions is at the beginning of all curiosity. Having your own "why" means you can stand your own questions, and find your own way. Lovely expression indeed. Grazie Tiziana for the reminder!

  9. I do not fully understand, but I will ponder this along with all the other things that I am currently pondering. By the way that is just the cutest little javelina ever.

it's a good phrase to remember for those things or people we see as outside "the norm." set aside judgments. there are myriad reasons for being, often beyond our ken.

    1. Still thinking about this... Sometimes it is difficult to see the reason, but I suppose that does not mean it doesn't exist.
