Mermaid

 Sausalito, 2013

They all nod in recognition.
I'm baffled, yet
nod along.

I read every line and see
nothing but murk.

Keep reading. In time
it will make sense.

Quiet persistence. A few of us
still believe in it. I am
one of the few.

Once in a while
I will swim up
from the bottom, eyes
just above the surface.

Is it safe out there?

And my voice, raspy
from silence, will share with you
what I believe.

  4. The ocean, the seaside, the beach, on a sailboat...memories of all surface while reading your poem.

  6. love your poem, and love that you have shared it with us. there's a quiet persistence in that, too, and a raspy truth.

  8. Perhaps it's the raspy voice, but I imagine a mermaid who has lived through many sailor-loves, a siren with so many songs that she's forgetting a few, and whose hair is made from moldy seaweed.
