daydreaming

Sunday--June 24, 2012

I love findings entries such as the following in my journal.  A prototypical scenario one might find if they burrowed their way into one of my fantasies, or peeked in my journal.

Monday--March 8, 2010

Today I looked in three cookbooks before finding Amanda Hesser's recipe in The Cook and the Gardener, pages 372-373.  I'd forgotten how much I adored this book.  She used crushed coriander seeds in her recipe, something I'd never done.  Also, I just love the way Amanda Hesser writes about food.  She has a way of combining smug with charming.  Oh how I'd like to sit in her kitchen and share a bottle of wine and some casual conversation with her.  I imagine her husband has scooped up their kids and gone to visit some relative.  It's just us girls, in jeans and t-shirts.  There are glasses of wine, olives, and toasted nuts.  No cooking, just talking.  We get a bit tipsy, laugh like hyenas, and I take a cab back to my hotel.  I fall asleep watching an ancient episode of That Girl that has somehow shown up on cable.

  1. This makes me wish I were more assiduous in writing in my journal: noting those moments and trains of thought that are so revealing and representative of who we are. And that seems like an evening I'd enjoy! I don't know that cookbook but I'd like to.

  2. I could never get through that book....too much smug?

She seems much more approachable these days, especially in your scenario.

    Pages what?

  6. What lovely thoughts. I guess it could be made a reality with those you do know? It is winter here so such nights in the kitchen sound extra appealing at the moment! When it gets too cold I start cooking again to warm up our home.

    1. And what better way to warm the home than with delicious smelling food in the oven or on the stove top.

  8. Anything that involves laughing like a pack of hyenas is the benchmark of a good time.

You've inspired me to consider going back to a journal or some sort of visual diary. I always write my ideas and thoughts on paper scraps and though I keep most (pretty much all) things, I don't often look back.

    1. Yes, an ideal benchmark.

Prior to this project I didn't do much looking back. I'll do more now.

  10. I have just started reading my journals when I lived in a monastic community in my mid twenties... whoa... crazy. I am thankful I have them but, I can only take very small doses of myself.

The only reason I did so is that my mum insisted I take my boxes of stuff home.... she is cleaning house.

I am going to check out the book you mentioned.

    1. Its funny how when looking back it often seems we've lived several lives.

I'm also close to finishing another book I've really enjoyed, The Three Cornered World.
