Twilight

Half Past Five, 2012

There is something about the sunsets in La Jolla. When I'm here, I cannot miss them. I enjoy sunsets at home, but they don't pull me toward them as these do. I bundle up each evening and walk along the water while the sun sinks and the sea roars. I watch the horizon as the light shifts and the colors change. It is hypnotic. I saw a fire truck filled with firemen pull to the curb and settle in to watch the display this evening. So many people do the same. I understand. The sea and what's left of the sun absorb all of my tension. Most of the onlookers disappear with the sun, leaving the brief stretch of time before dark to the congregation of cormorants, and me.

  1. So beautiful. That moment of transition - dusk to night - is one of my favourite times to be walking. And by this sea? magical.

  2. it is the water element that attracts us like a strong primordial and motherly element. Having grown up on the water, I feel that ever so intensely...and miss it, daily. Lovely photo: the sea looks like melted mercury

  3. How lovely that you can watch by the water. And I love that a truck full of firemen decided to watch, too!

  5. I miss the water. Technically I live inland. One of my big dreams is to live on the water. Preferably an ocean.

  6. A group forming around the setting sun, a good sign. No computer, no cell phone, but the appreciation of "just" water, light, sun.

Love the rhythm and feel of "congregation of cormorants" :)

  8. exquisite writing. when we were in costa rica, pacific side, last year, that was our ritual: to spend sunset-ocean time every day. every day of course was different, cloud formations, colors, flash in the water, but always that stunning yet calming result. thanks for conjuring a wonderful image and memory.

  11. There is something to be said about sunsets over water...I don't know what makes them different but they are. I haven't seen the sun in over a week and am not likely to for at least another one so I'm trying to soak up that peach from your photograph.

  12. "...while the sun sinks and the sea roars." With these words I am immediately transported to the long stretch of beach near my parents' house. We'd wander along watching the setting sun, then slowly make our way across the estuary and back up the river, before crossing the paddocks and reaching home. Thank you! Have a lovely weekend Denise. Best, Annie x

  17. Sometimes I love NYC so much I can't stand it. But then when I see this photo and think of watching the sunset in a place like that, I also can't stand it. But I'm so glad that it's there and that people are being hypnotized by it. This is a really beautiful description.
