  5. I am reading and savoring Virginia Woolf's "The Waves".

  6. Just finished State of Wonder by Anne Patchett -- really compelling -- a great read!

Since I'm a librarian and a book fiend, I always have too many books on my waiting list and only ever get to a fraction of them. Sigh.

  7. Reading Small Lives, by Michon. And, reading Harry Potter aloud before bed to the kids.

  8. The Toss Of A Lemon by Padma Viswanathan, just finished ( 2 hrs. ago) The Maytrees By Annie Dillard.

Both bought at a Borders book store which is going out of business.

Saddened by any book stores closing, chain or individual.

Where will I go on my day off for a magazine fix?

    xo Jane

  14. Just fished a Donna Leon thriller, Death at La Fenice, which was incredibly good and am now onto Carlo Levi's Christ Stopped at Eboli and a book about Rome by Robert Hughes. Love this post and all the ideas for future books I'm getting here.

  17. I'm on a bit of a Simone de Beauvoir kick at the moment. I'm making my way through her autobiographical works and am reading La Force de l'âge (The Prime of Life) right now. I also started L'Invitée (She Came to Stay) last night.

Fine Just The Way It Is, Annie Proulx

on another note, Ann Patchett is partnering w/ another woman to open a bookstore in Nashville, hopefully in the fall. she couldn't bear that our city has almost no bookstores now.

  22. My childhood Astrid Lindgren books - again!!

  23. Michael Pollan's 'The Omnivore's Dilemma'. I keep pausing to look up + verify what the author says online...its fascinating but biased.

  25. I've been in a children's literature state of mind this summer. I've also just finished The Wind in the Willows, which I really enjoyed. I feel like summer is the perfect time to crack open those stories. Who doesn't want to read about anthropomorphic animals wearing three-piece suits? Currently reading The Princess and the Goblin. And The Hunger Games is an awesome, gripping read.

Are you on Good Reads? If you are, we should really be friends.

  26. Hi.

Right now...'Don't Let's Go To the Dogs Tonight'. Finished a few out in the field this stint including 'The Sparrow' and 'Remarkable Creatures'...the former I was hesitant to read but was quite impressed with.

btw--did you ever finish the Wallace Stegner book (can't remember which one you were reading now...)...would you recommend it?

  27. i am between books since finishing "just kids" but nothing seems to be hooking me in the same way. there's always a bit of disappointment for me after i read something i love. first, it ends. and second, nothing compares for a few months.

  28. I'm re-reading The Maytrees, thanks to you (and loving it all over again). Also ordered The Art of Eating's Dessert Issue...good before bed, short pieces.

  29. Look at all of this good stuff. Now everyone should be set with reading material for the summer. My bedside table is about to fall over. Oh well, there isn't any hurry. I hope you are all enjoying summer (or winter...depending on where you are).

    nancy, Go Ann Patchett!

Joyti, Good idea. We can't believe everything we read.

Joanna, I am not. Should I be?

Rachel, I was listening to The Spectator Bird and wasn't really feeling it. I didn't get very far. Maybe I'll go back to it one day, but I've tabled it for now.

Katrina, I know what you mean. This happens to me with movies too.
